Nancy Goodrich & Jill Mass

We are friends, and our moms have Alzheimer’s. The disease has taken our moms’ lives from them and has taken our moms from us. Our moms are not Evelyn and Jeanne any more, nor did they wish to become the women they are. And though we have lost our moms, we remain connected to them through our shared past and our present.

These photographs are meant to show these losses. They are inspired by our mothers’ behaviors – both past and present – as well as the feeling of loss itself. We have chosen simple images to reflect the simplicity of our mothers’ present lives, and we have chosen an alternative process, Ziatype, to represent the past and the softness of memory.
